On my desk was a printed and highlighted copy of The Roanoke Times article, “Looking Back: News items from The Roanoke Times & World-News from 25, 50 and 100 years ago” and sure enough we were featured in the 50 year flashback!
On August 13, 1968:
“Plans were announced Monday for a telephone answering service to provide Roanokers correct information about rumors. The system, called ‘Rumor Central,’ will be in operation in a few weeks, according to Raleigh Campbell, executive director of the Roanoke Valley Council of Community Service (CCS).”
My how times have changed! Can you imagine in present day if we had a service or program called Rumor Central? We’re sure it was a positive service to provide accurate information regarding resources available to Roanokers, similar to what we still provide today. It’s clear that we’ve been viewed as the information hub of the Roanoke Valley for quite some time now.
Rumor Central was founded just eight years prior to the establishment of the Council of Community Services. According to a timeline of our history, we published a Directory of Community Services in 1964 and the Information and Referral telephone service was planned in 1967. While not documented, Rumor Central is likely to be connected with the Information and Referral telephone service.
We still offer Information & Referral Services through 2-1-1 VIRGINIA. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA has been contracted with the Council since 2006. We will celebrate our 13th anniversary of 2-1-1 VIRGINIA on February 11, 2019. 2/11 is also observed as 2-1-1 Day!
While we’re not exactly dispelling rumors anymore, 2-1-1 is available 24/7, 365 days of years to help you find the local resources you need. And we no longer operate with a giant book of resources and a telephone, we now have an online database and website with the ability of talk, text, email or chat.
