2013 Governor’s Housing Conference & Virginia Housing Awards

The 2013 Governor’s Housing Conference took place November 20-22, 2013 at the Marriot Norfolk Waterside in Norfolk, Virginia. The Council of Community Services’ President, Dan Merenda and the Community Housing Resource Center’s Director, Matt Crookshank attended. At the conference, Dan and Matt had the opportunity to hear from national housing leaders, to explore stories on the impact of housing, attend breakout sessions and network with others across the state.

If you remember our post a few weeks ago, we proudly announced the Council of Community Services’ Community Housing Resource Center’s nomination for the 2013 Virginia Housing Awards for the category of Best Housing Program or Service. (The 2013 Virginia Housing Awards were a part of the Governor’s Housing Conference.)

As we said previously, just to be nominated is an honor but to win would be gratifying! We were nominated alongside several worthy programs and sadly we did not come out on top as the recipient of the award. The awards recognized innovative, effective efforts that address housing needs in Virginia, so it’s pretty great to receive a nomination especially when the nomination came from our peers in the Roanoke Valley.

The winner?

Award Recipient: Pathway Homes Inc. Project: Pathways to Recovery

We knew there would be stiff competition.

Pathway Homes Inc. is a nonprofit charitable housing development organization. Pathway Homes serves more than 400 adults in the Northern Virginia community who have a history of serious and persistent mental illness.

Congratulations, Pathway Homes Inc!

So we didn’t win, but we’re still doing pretty great things at the Community Housing Resource Center! For instance, have you read about our housing challenge? 28 Homes in 100 Days!
