2-1-1 VIRGINIA Celebrates 14 Years of Service to Virginians!

ROANOKE, VA (February 11, 2020) – Today marks the 14th anniversary of 2-1-1 VIRGINIA, a free, 24-hour information and referral service of Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), provided in partnership with the Council of Community Services. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA is the Commonwealth’s largest information and referral network available to citizens for health and human services.

Every day, individuals contact 2-1-1 VIRGINIA to access free and confidential crisis and emergency counseling, disaster assistance, food, health care, and insurance assistance, stable housing and utility payment assistance, employment services, veteran services, and childcare and family services. Last year in Virginia, 2-1-1 assisted 90,000 people, providing more than 248,500 referrals to helping programs.

2-1-1 VIRGINIA does more than “patch people through” to agencies. Instead, 2-1-1 Contact Specialists are trained to identify root causes of a client’s problem – and connect them with a wide range of available resources that meet all the underlying needs, not just the one that prompted the call, chat, or email.

Through partnerships and collaborations, 2-1-1 VIRGINIA has expanded its service-offering since early stages of operation. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA serves as a central information source during health scares like the Coronavirus, operates the Patient Locator system to aid in family reunification during large-scale disasters, and works closely with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) during emergency situations. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA also participates in emergency drills with Dominion Virginia Power and works with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) to provide Infant & Toddler Connection services and VDSS for Kinship Care Navigation. 2-1-1 VIRGINIA also contracts with the Virginia Department of Veteran’s service to provide specialized information and referral services to veterans after business hours.

The Council of Community Services has provided information and referral services since 1964.
